Single Family Homes

304 Oakwood Ave

304 Oakwood Ave

This beautiful home, built in 1875, was the first house on Oakwood Avenue in what was formerly the pecan grove of Mordecai Plantation. At the turn of the century, the house was converted into apartments, but in the 1970s was returned to a single-family home. Recent renovations include the addition of a side yard and courtyard garden. This house was constructed by the same builder of the Second Empire Restaurant on Hillsborough Street, and is three years older than the restaurant. The home has the original heart-pine floors and upstairs mantels, and the original kitchen structure, which is separate from the house, is still behind the house and used a rental property.

305 Kinsey Street

305 Kinsey St

The old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” was never more correct than in the case of this house. Built between 1915 and 1919, the overall design and simple lines of this Colonial Revival style bungalow are nearly identical to several other homes in the neighborhood. This house has two unique features not evident from the street–a prime location that provides stunning views of the city skyline as well as one of the most dramatic and best-designed recent additions to a home in Boylan Heights.

504 E Jones Street

504 E Jones St

The Cameron-Gatling House is one of the oldest homes in Historic Oakwood. Francis H. Cameron, president of NC Life Insurance Company and Inspector General, bought it in 1873. Attorney E.P. Maynard bought it in 1885, and his nephew William Gatling moved into the house a child. Descendants of the Gatling family lived in the house until 2008. The single-story Greek Revival house stands out on a block of beautifully restored Victorians. Original features include a center-hall plan with high ceilings, heart-pine floors in excellent condition, and a standing-seam tin roof. The house was renovated in the early 20th century, and many elements survive from the period, including four mantels (each unique), wood trim and paneled doors, several light fixtures and built-in cabinets. The house originally had a full front porch that was removed in the 1950’s. The house (approx. 2,400 sq. ft) has three bedrooms, two full baths, and a partially finished basement. The spacious corner lot features mature plantings, a secluded courtyard, detached garage and ample room for a kitchen garden. The Cameron-Gatling House is being offered for sale through the Preservation North Carolina’s Endangered Properties Program. The house is a contributing structure in the Oakwood National Register Historic District, and rehabilitation work would be eligible for historic preservation tax credits.

711 Bloodworth Street

711 S Bloodworth St

A 400 square foot addition was completed in 2008. This beautiful home features a wonderful master bedroom and front porch view of downtown Raleigh that was recently improved with the new Marriott hotel. The Performing Arts Center is two blocks away and the neighborhood is one of the best kept (and affordable) secrets in downtown.

729 S Person St

729 S Person St

It features a spacious living and dining room area and a second floor private master bedroom suite with a walk-in closet and views of the downtown skyline. This open floor plan includes a total of four bedrooms and two full baths. Green focused renovation included reclaimed Brazilian cherry hardwoods and the use of local and recycled products where possible. The bricks for the patio and millwork on the front porch were reclaimed from an apartment tear-down in Five Points and thus saved from the landfill. The kitchen countertops are reclaimed maple and the flower beds are bordered with granite curbs discarded from downtown and said to be over 100 years old.
