Downtown Raleigh Alliance

About the City

The City of Raleigh is an integral partner in the development of Downtown Raleigh.  In addition to the new Convention Center and Fayetteville Street Renaissance projects, the City also takes the lead in developing the planning strategies that provide the community with a vision for the future of downtown.

In fact, Raleigh has a proud tradition of good planning beginning with the William Christmas Plan of 1792 and continuing through today.

During 2002 and early 2003, the City of Raleigh, in partnership with the Alliance, undertook a community based planning process entitled Livable Streets. After months of public input, refinement of ideas and suggestions and 4 days of workshops, this plan was presented to the Planning Commission in April 2003, and unanimously adopted by the Raleigh City Council on May 6, 2003.

Summary information on the outcome of the plan and on the status of the various recommendations in the plan can be found on the Livable Streets website, or you may link to the full approved document by clicking here. (This is a large document and could take up to 5 minutes to load.)

The Downtown Raleigh Alliance e-newsletter is a convenient way to stay updated on the progress of downtown. Another great source of information regarding the status of the new convention center, the Fayetteville Street Renaissance and other key parts of the Livable Streets strategy is the Livable Streets Update, a newsletter published by the City of Raleigh Public Affairs Department.
