News
Lock,
Take, Hide
Larcenies from motor
vehicles and motor vehicle parts accounted for 37 % of all
the larcenies reported in Raleigh last year. These larcenies represented
22 % of all the Raleigh Part I crimes, categorized as four
violent crimes and three property crimes to include burglary, larceny,
and motor vehicle theft, reported to the FBI. Many of these incidents
are crimes of opportunity and can easily be prevented.
The Downtown Raleigh
Alliance and the Raleigh Police Department recently launched
an educational program to proactively reduce motor vehicle related
larcenies. Dozens of bright yellow and red “Lock, Take,
Hide”
signs have been mounted on sign posts in downtown Raleigh. These
signs encourage drivers to lock their cars, take
their keys, and hide their belongings.
In 2003 the Lock, Take,
Hide Larceny Prevention Program, launched in downtown Dallas, proved
to be remarkably effective. Within the first three months, law enforcement
reported a 50% decrease in larcenies related to motor vehicles and
motor vehicle parts.
Raleigh law enforcement
indicated that thieves often pull door handles looking for unlocked
vehicles and usually don’t break windows or pry doors
open unless they see something inside that looks valuable.
Victims of larceny lose both valuable property and valuable
time. Often they have to deal with damaged property, such as
broken windows and pried doors. You can help prevent crime by
following these three simple precautions:
lock your car, take your keys,
and hide your belongings.
