FIRST
FRIDAY BANNER AUCTION
When: First Friday, May 4 (6 pm-9 pm)
Where: City Market located on the corner of Martin and Parham Street
Friday, May 4, 2007 will continue the silent auctions of the Fayetteville
Street Art banners. Coinciding with downtown Raleigh’s First
Friday Gallery Walk, the auction of the beautiful banners
will be held on Parham Street in City Market from 6 pm-9
pm. Several ‘love’, and a few 'angel' banners
will be available to the public at the auction.
The brainchild of Raleigh Arts Commissioner Jessie Cannon the
art banners are a wonderful way for local artists to display their
work. “I am so pleased that the response from our local
artists has been so positive,” said Jessie Cannon. Half
the proceeds from the auction will go back to the artists and the
other half will fund future banners along Fayetteville Street. Throughout
the year, the banners will be auctioned off during the First Friday
Gallery Walks.
The artists’ love banners were hung on lamp posts lining
Fayetteville Street for Valentine's Day and during the months of
March and April. The artists who painted the ‘angel’ banners
were Georges LeChevallier, Anna Podris, Keith Norval, Kathy Ammon,
Karin Baumeister-Rehm, Veronica Samuel, Matthew Mahler, Kitty Mecham,
Stacy Lewis, Jose Manuel Cruz, Bill Burch, Kirk Adam, Virginia
Owen and Constance Pappalardo.
Currently, you can stroll along Fayetteville Street and view the
wonderful work of local artists who painted their visual concepts
of ‘spring’. The twelve artists participating
in the ‘spring’ banners project are Karin Baumeister-Rehm,
Bill Burch, Douglas Clark, Jose Manuel Cruz, Larry Dean, Barbara
Jacobs, Lisa Jones, Carol Lancaster, Stacy Lewis, Starr Oldorff,
Martha Thorn and Emily Weinstein. Artspace and Visual Art
Exchange were instrumental in recruiting the artists for these
projects. “This is a great way for local artists to
have a presence in downtown and a wonderful way to showcase Raleigh’s
talent,” said Sarah Powers, Executive Director of Visual
Art Exchange.

DOWNTOWN RALEIGH RECYCLES!
An unusual-looking truck has joined the mix of cars, buses and
pedestrians in downtown Raleigh’s traffic. A recycling truck
circles downtown every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon to
pick up recyclables from businesses.
The program, known as “Downtown Raleigh Recycles,” began
in August. To date, 45 businesses are recycling paper and plastic,
metal or glass food and beverage containers. This pilot program
offers businesses the convenience of putting out recycling at the
same time as garbage. The program benefits the City by reducing
the amount of garbage that is sent to the North Wake Landfill.
Participating businesses are easy to spot because they use large
blue carts or small green bins, both provided by the City's Solid
Waste Services Department. The recycling containers are provided
free of charge thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Division
of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance. In
addition to containers and curbside collection, business owners
who join Downtown Raleigh Recycles! receive window decals that
they can post to let patrons know that they recycle.
Businesses that use Solid Waste Services for garbage pickup can
receive recycling carts and collection at no additional charge. Businesses
in the Central Business District may be eligible to participate
even if they are not using the City for garbage service, and should
call 831-6489 for more information.
