DOS
TAQUITOS CENTRO
Location: 106 S Wilmington Street
Hours of Operation: Lunch:
Monday-Friday (11:30 am-2:30 pm) / Dinner: Thursday-Saturday
(5 pm-10)
It took more than a year to slowly transform a nearly century-old
building in downtown Raleigh into a beautiful, colorful restaurant. On
Monday, September 24, Dos TaQuitos Centro quietly opened
to the public.
Dos TaQuitos Centro serves both unique and traditional Mexican
cuisine, and uses fresh organic and local ingredients whenever
possible. The dishes range from homemade gorditas,
Mexican telera bread and steak tacos, to swordfish in pipian (pumpkin
seed sauce), wild mushroom chilaquiles, and chile
en nogada (fruit and meat stuffed poblano pepper). The
recipes use several types of fresh Mexican cheeses, and a whole
range of fresh and smoked hot peppers. Non-alcoholic drinks include aguas
frescas (fresh fruit drinks) and the popular Mexican drink, horchata. At
the bar you can enjoy not only the usual Mexican beers and margaritas,
but more than thirty types of tequila, as well as passion fruit
and guava flavored mixed drinks.
Dos TaQuitos Centro is not a carbon copy of its popular sister
restaurant in North Raleigh, Dos Taquitos. Most of the dishes
are distinct at each location; however, a couple favorites from
Dos TaQuitos have found their way into the Dos TaQuitos Centro’s
list of entrees. The selection of dishes offered at lunch
at Dos TaQuitos Centro is different from those at dinner. The
lunch menu was created for easy ordering and quick service. The
dinner menu is designed for a more relaxed, sit-down meal where
one can experience some of the more traditional and unique flavors.
Dos TaQuitos is located in a newly renovated historic building,
first constructed in 1910. Inside you will find one of the
original un-restored brick walls. This wall will be used to display
the work of local artists. The rest of the dining room contains
colorful crafts from Mexico or decorations created by the owner
and her friends and family.
For more information, call
Dos TaQuitos Centro at 919.835.3593.

DOWNTOWN RALEIGH SCHOOL NAMED BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL FOR 2007
Since its founding in 1909, Cathedral School has played a dynamic
role in the North Carolina educational community. It was the
first school in North Carolina to educate Native American children.
It was also the first Catholic School to integrate when high
school students from St. Monica’s School began attending
Cathedral School in the 1950’s. Even today, Cathedral
School is recognized as the hallmark of ethnic and racial diversity
among Raleigh’s private schools. Located in its
historic building on Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh,
Sacred Heart Cathedral School is among the oldest in the Diocese
of Raleigh, which serves 8,047 children in eastern North Carolina,
from Burlington to the coast, educating a diverse population
of students from all faiths, ethnic origins, and economic backgrounds.
The U.S. Department of
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings has announced that Sacred
Heart Cathedral Catholic School has been chosen as a National
No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon School for 2007. A
total of eight schools in North Carolina received the national
recognition.
The No Child Left Behind—Blue
Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private
K-12 schools that make significant progress in closing the
achievement gap or those whose students achieve at very high
levels. The schools submit an extensive application and are
selected by a panel based on one of the following criteria:
- A school has at least 40 percent of its students from disadvantaged
backgrounds who have dramatically improved their performance
in at least the past three years in reading and mathematics
and are achieving at high levels.
- A school may be recognized if its students achieve at the
highest levels, that is, if the school is in the top 10 percent
of the schools in the nation in reading and mathematics in
the last grade tested, as measured by an assessment referenced
against national norms, or in the top 10 percent in its state
as measured by a state test in at least the last grade tested.
Sacred Heart Cathedral School is being recognized for high
achievement. Along with test scores, the schools were
evaluated on other measures such as overall school program,
assessment, curriculum, instructional methods and professional
development. “This is a huge accomplishment and
honor for our school. Words cannot express how proud
I am of the faculty, staff, students and parents for making
this a school community that is able to compete and be recognized
on a national level,” says Donna Moss, Principal of Sacred
Heart Cathedral School.
