Hey kids, ever wonder how places like Chavis Park got their name, or when the first college for African American students was established? On Saturday, February 13 at 2:00p.m., you and your family will learn about the rich history of the African American community in Raleigh as museum staff explores “5 Faces & Places” that have shaped Raleigh’s history. We will revisit some of the faces and places we learned about last year, and learn about some new ones as well. To learn about famous figures such as John Chavis and places like the Lightner Arcade, come celebrate Black History Month with the Raleigh City Museum and journey into the past!
Not only will you learn about Raleigh’s African American community, you will get to take a souvenir of your visit home with you as well. Every visitor will receive a free coloring book with local landmarks such as Shaw University and the Pope House. In addition to a coloring book, create your own cornhusk doll. Admission is free.
The Raleigh City Museum is located in the Historic Briggs Building at 220 Fayetteville Street. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m. and Saturday, 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Admission to the museum and programs is free. Come explore our newest exhibit, Art of Business.
