In 1865, Raleigh witnessed a firestorm of emotion as war consumed the state capital. Retreating Confederates, freed slaves, and invading Union soldiers moved along Raleigh’s streets and endured a rapidly changing world as the country’s bloody Civil War concluded. Join us Saturday, September 19, at 2:00p.m., as historian Ernest Dollar explores the end of the Civil War through letters, diaries, and photographs. These documents reveal the excitement and sadness of Raleigh citizens as they experienced one of the greatest times of change in American history.
