Dark humor has always been Howard Sherman’s forte, and with his new work he doesn’t disappoint. The artist’s unique ability to meld historical references with humor has set him apart. The Houston-based artist’s most recent paintings continue to exhibit this ability in an explosive, even bombastic fashion, despite a (somewhat) more economical use of visual noise. An increasingly sophisticated palette and less reliance on illustrative elements mark significant growth in Sherman’s work from his days as a syndicated comic strip cartoonist.

Sherman received his BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, and his MFA from the University of North Texas in Denton. Sherman had his first solo museum exhibition in fall 2008 at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. His work has been featured in New American Painting (Volume 60 and Volume 72), and was included in a two-year traveling exhibition titled New American Talent, organized by Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin, TX. In 2008, Sherman completed a three-month residency at the McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, NC.
