CABARET Book by Joe Masteroff Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood Lyrics by Fred Ebb Music by John Kander Produced & directed for Broadway by Harold Prince Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, this groundbreaking musical takes us inside the seedy Kit Kat Klub and takes us to the brink of history. Based on John van Druten’s play “I Am a Camera,” the story revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Author Jeff Shannon writes, “They're all living in a morally ambiguous vacuum of desperate anxiety, determined to keep up appearances as the real world--the world outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret--prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war.” CABARET played for 1165 performances on Broadway at the Broadhurst, Imperial and Broadway Theatres and for 336 performances in London at the Palace Theatre. It was revised for Broadway, first in 1987 and played for 261 performances at the Imperial and Minskoff Theatres, and most recently in 1998 at Studio 54, where it played for 2,377 performances. Cost: $20 general admission, $8 students
