Susan Schuhmacher Forces of Change

Location: Artspace

Date: Friday April 4, 2008 - Saturday April 26, 2008
Time: Tues-Sat (10 am-6 pm)

Susan Schuhmacher's life and work were profoundly impacted by 9/11. She views that day as a reminder that all life is transient, perishable - “but a fleeting vapor.” Since 9/11, Schuhmacher has delved into a personal spiritual search for the meaning and the purpose of life. This new reality prompted a change in her paintings - both in approach and medium. Schuhmacher's preferred painting medium has always been watercolor. However, for the past few years she has concentrated on acrylic abstracts, finding it a challenging means to explore psychological and spiritual aspects of human behavior. Schuhmacher earned a BA from Columbia College, concentrating in oil painting and art education. She completed some post graduate work at USC Columbia and at the Greenville Art Museum. Schuhmacher was the first elementary art teacher in Greenville in 1969 and has taught at public schools and privately for more than 30 years. Schuhmacher has been a member of the Artspace Artists Association since its inception and maintained a studio at Artspace for many years. She currently works from her home studio.
