Alchemy is known as the forerunner of modern chemistry but has other philosophical and metaphysical aspects as well. The early alchemists were deeply involved with the art of freeing the part of their psyches that were imprisoned in matter. Melinda Fine’s recent collages are illustrations of alchemical equations -- proof of the transmutation of lead into gold, body into spirit.
Born in Boston, MA and raised in Greensboro, NC, Melinda Fine received her undergraduate degrees in psychology and English, as well as an MFA in creative writing from UNC-Greensboro. She also attended two years of graduate school in graphic design at the School of Design, NCSU, Raleigh, NC. She taught graphic design and typography as a professor of art at Meredith College from 1997 to 2008. She was juried into Artspace in 2003, and has occupied Studio 208 since December, 2008.
