The Magnificent Mile was first run in November 2006. It is the inspiration of Sarah Witt who has Primary Lateral Sclerosis, a motor neuron disease related to ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease; and Scott and Amy Corsmeier, siblings who have Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, a hereditary motor neuron disease. Sarah was an avid runner and marathoner until her illness in 2004. Now, she is confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak. Scott and Amy were diagnosed when they were young children.
Associated Street Closures:
Beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, September 13, the group will assemble in the 300 and 400 blocks of Hillsborough Street. The event will consist of three – one mile races. The first will begin at 2 pm, the second at 2:20 pm and the third at 2:40 pm. The runners will proceed east on Hillsborough Street to Salisbury Street, south on Salisbury Street to Morgan Street, east on Morgan Street to Wilmington Street, north on Wilmington Street to Edenton Street, west on Edenton Street to Salisbury Street, south on Salisbury Street to Hillsborough Street, west on Hillsborough Street back to the start/finish line. At 3 pm there will be some children races utilizing the 200 and 300 blocks of Hillsborough Street. All races will conclude by 3:30 pm. This event will require the 400 block of Hillsborough Street to be closed from 12 noon until 4 pm and the 00 block of Harrington Street to be closed from 11 am until 5 pm on Sunday, September 13.
