Artists at Work: Sandy Cole and Kevin Brown

Watch ninth-generation potter Sandy Cole and her husband, Kevin Brown, at the potter’s wheel. The well-known Sanford couple will create a variety of objects, from decorative pots to whimsical piggy banks, at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. This month’s Artists at Work will demonstrate their craft during a drop-in program on Saturday, April 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunday, April 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and weekend parking is free.
Cole’s family has been “turning and burning” in North Carolina since the 1700s. Hear her talk about her family tradition that continues today at North Cole Pottery, a business she and her husband opened in 1989. They make a broad range of cookware, folk pottery and decorative forms in stoneware and bright glazes. Cole is known for her imaginative “face” jugs that have been featured in museums and galleries across the nation.
After the program, check out the small exhibit Art Pottery Traditions in North Carolina. Then visit the Museum Shop to see more pieces from North Cole Pottery.
