Barbecue, barbeque, BBQ or bar-b-que. However it’s written, this mouth-watering delicacy spells “delectable” and is a delicious part of North Carolina history. The virtues of the state’s eastern-style barbecue versus western-style barbecue have been debated for centuries.
Whether you are a new North Carolinian wanting a proper introduction to barbecue or you are a lifelong resident craving more information, an upcoming program at the N.C. Museum of History will satisfy your appetite. Bob Garner, one of North Carolina’s best-known and most recognizable authorities on barbecue, will present the Newcomers Series program North Carolina Barbecue on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. Hear this popular UNC-TV personality and author, taste eastern- and western-style barbecue, and meet new people during this informal program. Register by Monday, Feb. 26 by calling 919-807-7968. The fee is $10 per person, but free to Museum of History Associates.

Garner has conducted tasty research across North Carolina to define and report barbecue’s distinctive subtleties, so come benefit from his expertise. As a reporter and producer for UNC-TV, he has aired programs about his findings, and his books include North Carolina Barbecue: Flavored by Time and Bob Garner’s Guide to North Carolina Barbecue. Additionally, Garner is certified by the N.C. Pork Council as a barbecue judge. He resides in Burlington.
