DESIGNING A 21st CENTURY CITY: URBAN TRENDS AND THE URBAN AGE
Bruce Katz, Brookings Institution, Presents February 8
January 25, 2007 — Raleigh, NC By 2008 Raleigh will emerge as one of the top 50 most populous cities in America and the northern anchor of the Atlantic-Piedmont megaregion. To cast light on the possibilities and to answer questions about designing and planning our city’s future, on February 8, at 6:00 p.m., Bruce Katz, Vice President at the Brookings Institution and Founding Director of the Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, will deliver a lecture on Urban Trends and the Urban Age at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
The Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program that Mr. Katz founded redefines the challenges facing cities and metropolitan areas. Mr. Katz regularly advises leaders and policy makers around the world on the competitiveness of metro areas.
The upcoming lecture is the second in a series of five, and follows the successful November 2, “What are the High Costs of Free Parking” presentation by Dr. Donald Shoup, author and international parking expert. Upcoming lectures include:
• May 10 — Transit-Oriented Development: How Do We Get There From Here?
• September 20 — Public Realm: How Do We Create A Pedestrian-Friendly City?
• November 8 — A Model For Urban Form: Traditional Codes Versus Form-Based
Codes
All lectures are free to the public. Registration is recommended through the City’s web site at www.raleighnc.gov.
To access Mr. Katz’s publications and presentations, visit www.brookings.edu/metro.
At the February 8 lecture, Paul Farmer, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the American Planning Association, will deliver the opening remarks. A question and answer period follows the evening’s presentations.
