Donation Enhances Museum's Educational Technology

Distance-learning education at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh will become more interactive and engaging for students and other patrons. Building on recent upgrades to its educational technology, the museum announces a state-of-the-art donation from SMART Technologies Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The company has given a Sympodium ID250 interactive pen display, a tool that interacts with digital material, to the museum.

Museum educators will use the ID250 to interact in two-way videoconferencing during distance-learning programs, or virtual field trips, with North Carolina students and other museum patrons in off-site locations.

“The Sympodium ID250 interactive pen display adds a new layer to our distance-learning programs,” emphasizes Jerry Taylor, multimedia producer at the N.C. Museum of History. “The instructor will be able to annotate images and primary sources based on real-time student observations, engage students in interactive games and activities, and quickly adapt lessons based on the needs of the students.”

Says Nancy Knowlton, CEO of SMART Technologies Inc., “Education today doesn’t start and stop at the four walls of conventional facilities. The North Carolina Museum of History has blown the doors off and opened up its programs through its distance-learning initiative, and we are pleased to support this effort through the donation of one of our Sympodium ID250 interactive pen displays.”

On the ID250’s 15-inch display screen, educators will use the tool’s interactive pen to control computer applications; write in digital ink over applications, Web sites and videos; and save notes in various formats. The ID250 connects directly to a projector and simultaneously displays a computer image on its screen and to a large screen, so audiences can easily follow along.
