NFL Greats Plan to Celebrate at City Market
Zydeco Downtown’s owner and former NFL player, Antwan Harris to host his birthday celebration with celebrities, friends and clients.
There’s going to be a birthday celebration this Saturday, June 9th in City Market. It’s sure to have food, good music, balloons and NFL players. Antwan Harris is inviting some of his friends and former NFL teammates to help him celebrate his 30th birthday, and you’re invited.
Antwan seems happy to have a seat, a moment to relax, as he settles in a plush chair in the jazz lounge of his New Orleans/Southern Cuisine restaurant and jazz lounge, Zydeco Downtown. When asked what he had planned for his birthday he starts listing off the day’s planned events, “I’m still working out the details but we’re going to have Mixed Waters play us some jazz, and then DJ Heavy will finish off the night. I’ve got Lawyer Malloy, Yancy Thigpen, Ty Law, and Otis Smith coming in and phone calls into a couple other players.” He won’t say who the others are, but he explains that they have the busiest schedules in the League. So we’re left to speculate.
He knows what kind of crowd the attendance of his teammates can bring and he’s not worried. “It’s open to the public. But it’s an ‘All White Attire’ party. He prefers white but will welcome everyone that dresses the official business casual attire.
Raleigh is Antwan’s hometown . He attended Ravenscroft School and went on to Virginia University before joining the New England Patriots, his spent his last year in the league with the Cleveland Browns. His five-year career with the Patriots secured him two Super Bowl rings. “People go to shake my hand and because I’m a football player they think it’s necessary to strengthen their shake. They usually end up crushing my hand. What they don’t understand is that I’ve used my hands, a lot. They’re tired, they’re sore. Be gentle with my hands. Please.” He doesn’t mind using them for autographs though. When he opened Zydeco Downtown on the cobblestone streets of City Market in December of 2005 he found himself flooded with requests, many from children. He was happy to oblige. He’s also happy to help out local schools participating in “Shaw Boosters”, a fundraising event for nearby Shaw University and he is currently organizing a football camp that will take place in July at Ravenscroft School.
He’s an exuberant man who looks younger than his 30 years. His enthusiasm seems to come from every aspect of his life: football, community service, Zydeco Downtown, family and his upcoming birthday party. He’s a Gemini, the twin, but there’s no one quite like Antwan Harris.
